If VPNs are all they’re cracked up to be, why do people still get caught doing stupid sh*t?

There was a show on TV this evening about internet security, and their benefits when it comes to protecting yourself from various nasties online. It then went on to describe how it’s not just the ‘good guys’ who use VPNs, and they are commonly used by criminals, so it got me wondering;

If a VPN masks your IP address from your ISP, and anyone else, how is it exactly that people get caught? I realise it’s not 100% secure, eg. a DNS leak, but is this just down to stupidity of these cyber criminals outside of their direct offence? Eg. They post on a forum about terrorism using a username that they use somewhere else, for example and it gets traced?

I forget the name of the show but it’s on BBC iPlayer if anyone is interested and in the UK (he says on a post about VPNs…)

Thanks!
