Even after deleting saved bookmarks, Tor Browser still seems to keep a copy of them.

By accident I discovered that Tor Browser keeps the URLs of long deleted bookmarks in its “places.sql” file. I only tested it on Debian 10, but it is most likely the same on all operating systems. Here’s how to reproduce it:

  1. Start Tor Browser v8.5.4

  2. Add any bookmark

  3. Delete the bookmark

  4. Quit Tor Browser

  5. Open the file “tor-browser_en-US/Browser/TorBrowser/Data/Browser/profile.default/places.sqlite” in an sqlite browser. I used the “sqlitebrowser” from the Debian repos.

  6. Look at the tables “moz_hosts” and “moz_places”, and you’ll see the bookmark that shouldn’t be there.

I know that keeping the Tor Browser directory on an unencrypted storage device isn’t recommended, but still: Why even bother offering the “Delete” option in the bookmarks context menu when it doesn’t even work? It gives users a false sense of security.
