Is a solar system worth it for my camper van?

Is a solar system worth it for my camper van? Hey guys, I bought a campervan for travelling around Australia. It’s going to be pretty simple with the only electronics needed being a 40W fridge, LED lighting strips (roughly 2M long), some fairy lights and a couple of outlets for laptop/phone charging and occasional other appliances. Being in Australia there is obviously a lot of sun but I will not be using a lot of energy I don’t think. At best I may use a laptop for say 6 hours…

Dual, switchable power source to run a charge controller?

Dual, switchable power source to run a charge controller? Would there be any issue to having a switched power source running a charge controller in a caravan? For example, the charge controller can be switched to run off solar panels on the roof or drawing directly from the vehicle towing it? Load circuit would be all the normal calculated things like lighting etc. Solar charge controllers can be found cheaply all over the internet(eBay, Amazon etc) but I’ve always wondered if they would have any problems with recieving power from…

The experimental project continues

The experimental project continues So, where I am up to. I have doubled the battery storage to 14ah to test what I want to do. I have been running a AA battery charger on USB to provide some demand for a week (and charge the AA’s for free, sort of). Just picked up a 300w inverter yesterday to run some garden lights. Disappointed the fan in this runs all the time, would prefer this to be temperature controlled, never mind. I have also got a 5v supply to a Raspberry…

Solar UV Light Project (Help?)

Solar UV Light Project (Help?) Hi All! I’m hoping I could get some help from this group. I’m an entomologist and a big part of what I do is collect insects. One of the most effective ways to do this is with a UV light setup at night. This often involves bringing a generator out into the field, or at least a car battery. I decided it would be a fun/useful project to develop a passive collecting technique following plans similar to a solar garden light (turns on at…

LFA: DIY Solar roof in stages

LFA: DIY Solar roof in stages Hi all. I’m looking for advice/recommendations for doing solar-grid-tie-in as a DIY project on my house, but in stages. All of these “solar companies” want you to plop down $15K+ at once. I’d rather do it piece at a time, mainly to save money. It seems like I could buy the inverter/charger/tie-in piece initially, and install that, with no panels. Then next month, buy a couple panels, mount them, and just “plug them in”. Then in another couple months, buy another panel and just…
